Mechanism of action

BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid synthetic fragment derived from a region of human gastric juice proteins. Research models propose activity through upregulation of growth hormone receptor expression, activation of the FAK-paxillin pathway supporting cell migration, modulation of the nitric oxide system for vascular effects, interaction with dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, and direct cytoprotective effects on gastrointestinal mucosal cells.

Research highlights

GI

Accelerated gastric ulcer and IBD healing in rodent models

Tendon

Superior Achilles tendon healing vs controls

CNS

Partial motor recovery in dopamine-lesioned models

Systemic

Cytoprotective effects: liver, kidney, cardiac models

Research notes

  • GI integrity: Extensive rodent models show accelerated healing of gastric ulcers, intestinal anastomoses, and chemically-induced colitis.
  • Tendon-to-bone: Demonstrated superior healing of Achilles tendon transection in rat models vs untreated controls.
  • CNS: Studies in 6-OHDA dopamine-lesioned rats show partial recovery of motor function, suggesting dopaminergic modulation.
  • Bone healing: Fracture union acceleration observed in tibial fracture models alongside increased bone mineral density markers.
  • Angiogenesis: Upregulation of VEGF and nitric oxide pathways linked to observed vascular-supportive effects.
